Kali linux install wifi adapter

Hi! Installed yourself a clean system, but even so Kali Linux does not see the wifi adapter? In general, Wi-Fi and Linux is an old sore subject, but it was on Kali that it showed up in all its glory from user needs. Let's look into it!

For Virtual Machine

Relevant for both Virtual Box and VMWare Workstation.

Let's start with the most common. I myself put myself a virtual machine, and there the main problem – the virtual machine does not see the built-in Wi-Fi modules, if it kills the wall. For many years there is an opinion that it will not see. And since the level of the virtual machine is higher than the installed inside it Kali, then Kali itself will not see the built-in adapter.

The solution is simple – take an external USB adapter which successfully connects to the virtual machine.

I.e. if you want to test your Wi-Fi networks through a virtual machine – be sure to buy an external module, otherwise do not waste your time. And about adapter compatibility and possible fixes – read below (so as not to get yourself a dead external Wi-Fi adapter).

From the addition, you may need to activate the adapter itself in a virtual environment. Using Vary as an example:

On the main system, there may already be two problems – it doesn't see the USB adapter and it doesn't see the built-in adapter. The main reason here, in my experience, is a driver and compatibility problem. This is the case when Wi-Fi does not work on Kali Linux. But first things first.

2. Googling (you can't think of a better tip) like "driver linux YOUR MODEL". Very often you will get to competent topic topics or even official device drivers. Give better advice? You can't think of anything better. There is no universal advice yet.

Installing and configuring the Alfa AWUS036ACH on Kali Linux

If you google "Best Wi-Fi adapter for Kali Linux", in all the articles the top five will be the Alfa AWUS036ACH adapter. It supports monitor mode and can inject packets. The only problem is that when connected, Kali Linux doesn't see the WiFi adapter. I will show you how to solve this problem by installing and configuring the Realtek driver for the Alfa AWUS036ACH adapter on Kali Linux.

Connect the adapter to a Kali Linux computer via an available USB port with the included cable.

If you enter the command lusb , you will see that Kali sees a physical USB device on bus 002.

But running the iwconfig command , shows that Kali does not recognize it as an available network device. Kali does not see it as a device it can use because the drivers are not installed yet.

Updating Kali Linux

As always you need to make sure you are using an updated version of Kali Linux before installing drivers.

Support for Dynamic Kernel Modules (DKMS) simplifies the process of installing driver updates.

By installing dkms, you can start cloning the rtl8812au driver from GitHub:

After downloading the rtl8812au driver from GitHub, navigate to the created directory:

In this directory, run the following command to compile all rtl8812 files into a binary application:

The make install command takes the binary files you just created and copies them to the appropriate location on the file system. Make sure that you run it with root permissions:

After restarting the system, you can confirm the installation of the rtl8812au drivers with the iwconfig command . Now there are two wireless interfaces, wlan0 и wlan1 – Realtek interface which we have installed.

Now in the list of available interfaces, you will see Wi-Fi Networks (REALTEK RTL8812AU 802.11A/B/G/N/AC 2T2R).

What is missing, or what about Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915?

I thought it was logical that a suitable firmware-linux package would solve the problem with the content of modinfo . Hoping that the versions of the hardware and the packages were alike, I resorted to APT (what else could it be). If you're interested, you can check what the terminal looks for with commands like:

will show "missing" and "uninstalled". Now let's get to the point.

"Install uninstalled".

Basically, all my problem libraries are here. They can be downloaded and copied into /lib/firmware/i915/ and update with sudo update-initramfs -u -k all and sudo apt-get update -y . I, on the other hand, will take a path that anyone can use. We expand the list of repositories by adding three more sources to the official list:

The main problem of Wi-Fi or wireless not getting detected in Kali Linux is due to the missing wireless drivers.We can solve the problem by updating the system.

The steps below can be followed to fix the Wireless Drivers problem in Kali Linux;

Step 1. Connect your Kali Linux System to Internet using Ethernet/Wired Network.

Step 2. Open the Terminal(Ctrl+Alt+T).A black Command line Interface appears just like below:

Step 3. Open sources.list file by using command “nano /etc/apt/sources.list“

Step 4. Now paste the links below into the source file. Press ‘Ctrl+O’ to write it into file and Hit Enter.

Step 5. Exit the source.list file using ‘Ctrl + X’

It will update and install all the required files,softwares and drivers,etc from the repositories.

Note: It might take some time to finish downloading the files. Till then Grab a cup of Coffee and Chill.

Step 7. After that, Run the command below in the terminal;

It installs all the drivers needed for your system.

Method 2: Fix Wireless Drivers Problem in Kali Linux

Step 1. Download the drivers file from the link below:

Step 2. Open the downloaded folder Right Click on blank Area and Click Open in Terminal.

Step 3. Type the command ‘tar -jxvf filename’

Note: Replace filename with drivers file name For Example: compat-wireless-2010-06-26-p.tar.bz2

Step 5. Type the command ‘make unload’ then ‘make load’

Wireless Adapter will start working as soon as you finish all the steps mentioned above properly.
