Disassembling old spare parts from tablets I found several H982_V2.4 20120517 HANA boards (they are from some 10" Digma tablets) based on ALLWINNER TECH A10 processors that had small (13×13 mm) submodule boards soldered on RTL8188x chips. Judging by the soldered-in cable with the antenna they were Wi-Fi modules, the datasheet we found on the chip confirmed this.
There were three variants of submodule boards: board with no marking and with marking V15-UN88 Ostar on RTL8188CTV chip, and board with marking FN-8112 V1.2 120810 on RTL8188EUS chip. All boards also have 40 MHz oscillator (labeled ROSON 40F15D or 40.00), and on boards with no marking and V15-UN88 Ostar also has DC/DC converter chip in SOT23-5 package with marking A120 or QX_VG (maybe it's HX1001).
The RTL8188x chip has a USB 2.0 connection interface, with the difference that its power supply voltage must be 3 – 3.6V, not 5V as in "regular" USB.
There are different ways of powering RTL8188x, you can supply power to the board (chip) from 5V source, via:
– A red LED (with a voltage drop value of 1.5 to 2V).
Using the above mentioned submodule boards you can simply make Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n 150Mbps) USB adapters for your computer. Using a USB plug from e.g. a dead USB memory stick it can be soldered directly to the pins of the submodule board (except for the +5V power pin of course!) and shrink-wrapped in a tube. Or use to connect to USB a piece of some useless USB cable (USB to Mini-USB, USB to Micro-USB, etc.).
To increase the range of the adapter you can use the antenna used in the tablet by cutting its coaxial cable to the required minimum length.
