TP-Link TL-WN822N – driver installation in Windows, configuration, problem solving

TP-Link has many good Wi-Fi adapters that can be used to connect to wireless networks on desktop computers and laptops. The TL-WN822N is great for PCs. Especially if you need a high performance adapter with good signal reception. It can also be used with laptops, but it is not very compact. Compared to the TP-Link TL-WN725N. But it is faster and more powerful. And Wi-Fi will catch better.

For a desktop computer, I think the TP-Link TL-WN822N is perfect. It connects via the USB cable that comes with the kit. The cable is 1.5 meters long. It allows you to bring the adapter out on the table, for even better reception. The cable is of high quality (compared to cheap extension cords), which also has a good effect on the work of the adapter itself.

From the technical characteristics I would like to highlight the Wi-Fi network speed up to 300 Mbit/s and two external antennas with 3dBi power. Thanks to the external antennas, we get a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal reception. There is a SoftAP mode – you can distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi.

The adapter itself is made of white plastic. The antennas are foldable. There is a QSS button for quick connection to Wi-Fi networks. It is nice that there are rubber feet on the bottom, thanks to which the adapter does not slip and stands stably on the table.

In general, when installing and configuring Wi-Fi adapters, there are problems with drivers and compatibility with different versions of Windows. In this article, I will show you how to find a driver for your hardware version of TP-Link TL-WN822N. We'll also look at different problems: when the adapter doesn't work, or doesn't see Wi-Fi networks.

This is quite a popular model, which has been on the market for a very long time. There are already 5 hardware versions of this adapter. Connecting and installing the driver for TP-Link TL-WN822N

Wait for about 15 seconds and see if the system has automatically detected the adapter. As I wrote above, Windows 10 can install the driver itself. A Wi-Fi network icon should appear (bottom right) . This means that you can connect to Wi-Fi networks. Or you can check in the Device Manager. If the Wireless Network Adapter, WLAN, or 802.11 appears there, everything is fine, you don't need to install anything else.

Download the driver from the TP-Link website, or install from the disk

Don't forget that the adapter comes with a disk. There are drivers on it for a certain hardware version. And you can install them from there. But it is better, of course, to download everything from the official website. There are always the latest drivers.

Select your hardware version (how to determine it, I showed above in this article) and go to the tab "Driver".

Download the driver you need. Depending on the operating system you have installed.

To install simply Run the Setup.exe from the downloaded archive.

1. You need to extract the files (folder) from the archive.
2. Go to Device Manager and right-click on the adapter, which will probably be identified as "Other device" (Network controller, USB2.0 WLAN) and select "Update driver".

If you can't find the Wi-Fi network after correctly installing the adapter, you need to check the WLAN settings in the Administration – Local Services folder. How do I install the TP-Link TL-WN725N driver?

Take your time with the installation. It is quite possible that the system has installed the driver itself and the adapter is already ready to work. In my case, Windows 10 automatically installed the driver for my TL-WN725N, and it worked right away. The connection status will be like this:

If in your case, the connection status does not change, or the message that Windows failed to install the device (driver), you need to put it manually. There are two ways to do this:

1. Install the driver from the disk that comes with the package. It's easy, run the disk and follow the instructions. Also from the disk you can put a utility. But there is no special need in it.
2. Download the driver (together with the utility) from the TP-Link website and install.

If you choose the second option, you first need to find out the hardware version of the adapter. There is V1 and V2. It is indicated on the package:

If necessary, change the hardware version of the adapter (if you do not have V2) .

Open the archive downloaded from the site and run the setup.exe. Installation is very simple.

You can also configure the Wi-Fi adapter using a special utility.

In order to find it, you need to go back to the first method and do everything from the beginning, but only up to step 7, where we choose not "Driver", а "Utility"..

This driver will work for both Windows 7 and Windows 10. That is why it is best to download it.

It starts downloading the archive, where we can find a file with the extension EXE. Run it and follow the instructions of the Installation Wizard.

Possible Problems and Solutions

Let's take a look at the most frequently encountered problems.

• The computer doesn't see the TP-Link TL-WN722N. If you plug the adapter into the USB port of the computer and Wi-Fi does not appear, then most likely you just need to install the drivers. TL-WN722N as an access point (giving out Wi-Fi)

You can use the TP-Link TL-WN722N adapter to give out Wi-Fi from your computer, sharing Internet access to other devices. You can set up the access point through the TP-Link firmware. You only have to enable the "SoftAP" mode and to set the necessary parameters (network name, password).
