Wi-Fi – what is it, how it works, how to use it, all about wi-fi
This article has been updated to reflect the current realities. Wi-Fi 6 and all the novelties included. Enjoy learning! Respectfully, your loyal friends at the wonderful ViFiGid.
Wi-Fi…oh how much is in that sound! And how many of those sounds have created myths among the people, it's scary to imagine. Hi all! Today on our wireless technology portal we're going to have a central article about Wi-Fi itself. But with no special tricks, in simple words, you understand) Let's go!
Central Problem
Running down the street, when asked what Wi-Fi is, people have different answers. I leave a few options below, I give the meanings themselves, rather than verbatim statements:
- Internet – well, in terms of wi-fi – this is the Internet itself, in which one looks at the sites, favorite Vkontakty and youtubchik
- Router/Router – is the device itself.
- Wireless transmission of information – in the meaning of the technology.
- Connecting a smartphone/notebook – as one of the functions of the devices.
A few people just "hung around", apparently thinking that the answer or silly, or at the wrong time they were asked) Well, never mind. Everyone has heard about the Wi-Fi. But what is it really? Do you have the right answer?
By the way, I always have the comments open. If you have a question, ask it below and we'll figure it out)

I'll answer as someone who has been working from Moscow cafes for the last six months. In random order:
1. "Strelka" (always has a place, quiet, nice people, Internet, coffee for 100 rubles), although in general there is not too cheap, of course.
2. "Bunka" on Chistoprudny Boulevard. In terms of working conditions, it's all the same, just in a different neighborhood.
3. "People as People" is a tiny cafe in Solyanskiy tupik with a unique microclimate: alcoholics, Vyshka students, filmmakers, foreign tourists (how do they find it?) and clerks. Very cheap and generally revered place, but no outlets and the old tradition does not take cards.
4. The Food Cafe on Maroseyka Street replaces the closed "Solyanka" which used to be the best place in Moscow during the daytime. Here, of course, is not quite the same: more people, more obscure people come for lunch, more expensive, not such a beautiful place, no veranda, but it is worth mentioning for order.
5. Chez Maman is a new version of "Jean-Jacques" on B. Nikitskaya. True, there is not much space. But great breakfasts.
6. "Khachapuri" in Gnezdnikovsky or Krivokolny Alley. You can work while sitting on the veranda.
What is the English word for "Wi-Fi distribution"?
On the phone in the Wi-Fi settings, find the item "Wi-Fi hotspot", turn it on. Look up the password or set it. This is for security and to make sure no one else connects but you. Now search for the point by name through your laptop.
Everything will work out. Only some cellular operators have restrictions on the distribution of Wi-Fi. For example, MTS on many tariffs prohibits such distribution of traffic. The operator understands that the TTL began distributing – all devices have a different TTL, the phone has 65, the laptop 158. It is this difference and change of stream is recognized by the operator, and sends an SMS warning that such distribution is prohibited, charged separately.
Go to the settings of your smartphone. In wireless networks, select the item "Wi-Fi hotspot "Select the item Access point settings. In it you can set the encryption type, set the password, select the frequency range and the name of the Wi-Fi that your phone will give out.In your laptop, go to Start => Options => Network and Internet => Wi-Fi. Click on show available networks, find your Wi-Fi connection on the list that appears and connect to it. Ziz 4
Pronunciations
Everything is easy to pronounce here. I'll write it in Russian to make it clear. It's pronounced "WYF". First we say "Vai", then a pause of half a second and then "Fai". Now about the accent. The accent should be on the second letter a – "Vai Fai". Not on the first one, but on the second one. Well, as the "wifi" – you should not pronounce it, it sounds very rural and is often used as a pun.
What else can you call "wi-fi"? It can also be called "Wireless Network" or "Access Point." That is, a local place where a local network is distributed by radio waves.
Briefly about the wireless network
It turns out that 90% of users confuse Wi-Fi and the Internet. Let me tell you a secret right away – these are completely different things. Wi-Fi is not the Internet. It is just a technology which allows two or more devices to communicate with each other via radio waves according to IEEE 802.11. Let me explain with an example.
Ivan has a router (or a router which is the same thing) at home. To him from the staircase is connected to a cable from the provider, through which the Internet flows. Then to distribute the Internet on phones, tablets or laptops you set up a WiFi network on the router. Once configured, it can connect any device that has a special transmitter.
So, if the provider will disconnect Ivan from the Internet for non-payment, the wireless network will continue to exist, but without the Internet. So my dear friends and readers – do not confuse the concept of "Internet" and "Wi-Fi" – they are completely different things. They can exist without each other.
Another interesting fact is that 2.4 GHz radio waves are used as transmissions. The same frequency is used by mobile operators, microwave ovens, radios, and many similar devices. But more recently, a new 5 GHz data transmission standard has been introduced. On this wave, the data is transmitted much faster and the speed is higher.
But as I wrote earlier, it is the speed of the local wireless network, not the Internet. By the way, this is often used by marketers from companies which produce routers. Since the average consumer confuses the Internet and wi-fi, he often catches the eye to the inscription that this router can support speeds: 300, 450 Mbit per second, or even a few Gigabits.
But in reality, Internet speeds higher than the one provided by the provider – will not. Therefore, this speed is only possible within the local network – that is, in your home between devices.
